Exciting Times at Stampede!

We have an incredibly talented group of cowboys working at Thorlakson’s! It’s everyone’s favourite time of the year - the Calgary Stampede. The excitement for the rides, entertainment and food only skims the surface of the excitement of our team members that compete in it. This year, we had Tom Thorlakson, Micaela Thorlakson and Denise Greanya all representing Thorlakson’s in Team Cattle Penning, and Milt and Kier Scott representing Thorlakson’s in the World Stock Dog Championship.

Team cattle penning has its roots in the practical ranch work of the American West, where cowboys needed to separate specific cattle from large herds for branding, medical treatment, or transport. This essential task required skilled horsemanship, quick decision-making, and seamless teamwork among riders. Over time, what began as a daily chore evolved into a competitive sport. By the mid-20th century, team penning began gaining popularity as an organized event at rodeos and equestrian competitions. In this timed sport, teams of three riders work together to cut designated cattle from a herd and guide them into a small pen at the opposite end of the arena—typically within 60 to 90 seconds. Today, team penning is enjoyed by riders of all ages across North America and beyond, celebrating both the heritage and skill of working cattle horsemen.

This year, we had multiple champions! Tom won the Open Class and Micaela placed third in the 14 class.

Denise had an incredible weekend and won the 10 class, placed 2nd in the 14 class (with an exciting 28 second ride) and third in the Open.

Stock dog trials are competitive events that showcase the skills of herding dogs as they work livestock under the direction of a handler. These trials have their origins in the practical needs of farmers and ranchers who relied on well-trained dogs to move and control sheep or cattle efficiently. In a trial, dogs are judged on their ability to gather, drive, and pen livestock through a series of obstacles, demonstrating obedience, intelligence, and instinct. The most common breed used in these events is the Border Collie, known for its exceptional herding ability, although other breeds also participate. Stock dog trials not only test the working partnership between dog and handler but also celebrate the vital role these animals have played in agriculture for centuries.

Milt and Kier are both staples in the Stock Dog Community and both made it to the finals of the Stock Dog Championship at Stampede. Kier placed 4th with his dog Blue, and Milt placed 7th with his dog Bob.

Congratulations everyone!
